Google added AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) to its search results — an AI-generated summary at the top of many search queries. This is essentially Google competing directly with Perplexity. Is Perplexity still worth paying for?
Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews appear above the traditional search results for many queries. An AI-generated paragraph or summary synthesizes information and links to sources.
What Works Well
Convenience. It’s built into Google — you already use Google, so AI answers are just there. No separate tool, no account required.
Simple factual queries. “How long does pasta take to cook?” or “What year did the Berlin Wall fall?” — AI Overviews handles these well and the convenience factor is high.
Google’s knowledge graph. For structured data (business hours, travel times, celebrity ages), Google’s underlying knowledge graph makes AI Overviews accurate.
The Problems
Accuracy has been notably poor. Google AI Overviews launched with viral examples of incorrect information: recommending people eat rocks for minerals, citing non-existent legal precedents, giving wrong medical advice. Google has improved this, but accuracy concerns persist.
Citation quality is inconsistent. The sources listed don’t always support the specific claims made. Some cited pages were removed or changed.
Not designed for research. AI Overviews is designed to answer the immediate query and keep you in Google’s ecosystem. It’s not designed for multi-step research, follow-up questions, or building knowledge.
Surface-level synthesis. For complex questions requiring nuanced synthesis, Google AI Overviews tends to give shallow, hedged answers.
Perplexity
Perplexity is a dedicated AI research tool built specifically to replace traditional search for research queries.
Higher Accuracy Standards
Perplexity’s core design prioritizes citation accuracy — answers that can be traced to specific source claims. The citations are more reliable and more directly relevant than Google AI Overviews.
This doesn’t mean Perplexity is always right, but the system design is more honest: cited claims are directly traceable.
Research Workflow Design
Perplexity is designed for the research pattern:
- Ask a question
- Read the synthesized answer
- Click source links to verify
- Ask follow-up questions
- Organize findings in Spaces
Google AI Overviews is designed to answer your immediate query and move on.
Model Quality
Perplexity Pro uses GPT-4o, Claude, or its own model for synthesis — higher-quality underlying models than what Google uses for AI Overviews.
Spaces and Organization
Perplexity Spaces let you organize research projects, share findings, and build knowledge over time. There’s no equivalent in Google.
Limitations
Costs $20/month. Google AI Overviews is free with Google Search. This is a real factor for casual users.
Not for navigational queries. “Amazon checkout page” — use Google, not Perplexity.
Head-to-Head: Test Queries
”What are the health effects of seed oils?”
Google AI Overviews: Gave a balanced answer, but cited some sources that were one-sided. Missed nuance about the quality of evidence.
Perplexity: Better synthesis of peer-reviewed literature, clearer about what evidence is strong vs. contested.
Winner: Perplexity
”How do I convert a List to a Set in Python?”
Google AI Overviews: Correct, quick, and convenient. Technical factual query.
Winner: Tie (both correct, Google slightly more convenient)
“What happened at the SEC’s latest meeting?”
Google AI Overviews: Gave good coverage with news sources.
Perplexity: Similar quality, slightly better source organization.
Winner: Slight Perplexity edge
Who Should Pay for Perplexity Pro?
Yes, worth it if:
- Research is a meaningful part of your work (3+ hours/week)
- You need reliable citations for professional use
- You do ongoing research projects that benefit from Spaces
- Accuracy matters more than convenience
Stick with Google AI Overviews if:
- You do casual research with quick questions
- You mainly need navigational, local, or shopping queries
- Budget doesn’t allow the $20/month
The Bottom Line
Google AI Overviews is good enough for casual queries. Perplexity is noticeably better for serious research. The $20/month question is whether you do enough serious research for the quality and workflow improvements to justify the cost.
For researchers, analysts, writers, and anyone whose work depends on accurate information synthesis: Perplexity is worth it. For everyone else, Google AI Overviews is fine for occasional questions.
