Meeting AI has become essential for knowledge workers. You shouldn’t be choosing between being present in meetings and having a record of decisions made. Both Zoom AI and Otter.ai solve this problem — but differently.

Zoom AI Companion
Zoom AI Companion is included with most Zoom Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans at no additional cost. This is its biggest selling point.
What It Does Well
Native Zoom integration. AI Companion is built into the Zoom interface. No third-party bot joining your call. No permission issues. Works on any Zoom meeting you host.
Real-time features. During the meeting, AI Companion can:
- Catch you up if you joined late (“What did I miss?”)
- Answer questions about meeting content so far
- Show you real-time chat summaries
Post-meeting summaries. After the meeting, you get an automatic summary with key points and action items sent to your email or Zoom app.
Chat AI. Zoom AI Companion extends to Zoom Chat — summarizing channels, drafting messages.
Limitations
Only works in Zoom. If 30% of your meetings are Google Meet, MS Teams, or in-person, you get no AI support for those.
Summary quality is good, not exceptional. The summaries are useful but sometimes miss nuance or mislabel action item owners.
No persistent knowledge base. Search works within Zoom but doesn’t build up a searchable meeting knowledge base the way Otter.ai does over time.
Otter.ai
Otter.ai is a dedicated meeting intelligence platform that works across multiple platforms.
What It Does Well
Cross-platform support. OtterPilot joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Webex meetings automatically. Set it and forget it — every meeting gets transcribed regardless of platform.
AI summary quality. Otter’s AI summaries have improved significantly. They capture key decisions, action items with owners, and follow-up questions more reliably than Zoom’s native summaries.
Search across all meetings. Otter builds a searchable library of every meeting. “What did we decide about the pricing strategy?” queries across months of meeting transcripts. This organizational memory is genuinely valuable.
OtterPilot. Otter can join meetings without you — useful for meetings you’re invited to but can’t attend, or internal meetings where a human note-taker isn’t assigned.
OtterChat. Chat interface for querying your meeting archive. Ask questions about decisions, search for topics, get answers grounded in your actual meeting history.
Limitations
Requires inviting a bot. Otter’s OtterPilot appears as a participant in meetings, which some guests find intrusive or have company policies against.
Costs money. The free tier (300 mins/month) is enough for light use, but regular use requires a paid plan.
Not as seamlessly integrated as Zoom AI. There’s always a little friction in setup compared to a native solution.
Decision Framework
Use Zoom AI Companion if:
- 90%+ of your meetings are on Zoom
- You already pay for Zoom Pro
- You want zero additional cost or setup
- Real-time in-meeting features matter to you
Use Otter.ai if:
- You attend meetings across multiple platforms
- Building a searchable meeting knowledge base is valuable
- You want to send AI to meetings you can’t attend
- Summary quality and action item tracking are important
Use both (and some people do): Zoom AI for in-meeting real-time features; Otter for post-meeting knowledge management and cross-platform coverage.
Alternatives Worth Mentioning
Granola (Mac only) takes a different approach: you take light notes during the meeting, and Granola combines them with auto-transcription for better, personalized summaries. Higher quality output than either Zoom AI or Otter, but Mac-only and $18/mo.
Fireflies.ai is a strong Otter competitor with better enterprise features and Salesforce/CRM integrations.
Read.ai focuses more on meeting intelligence (engagement scores, speaker analytics) in addition to transcription.
Free Tier Comparison
| Tool | Free Tier |
|---|---|
| Zoom AI Companion | Included in Zoom Pro ($16/mo) |
| Otter.ai | 300 mins/month, 30 min/conversation |
| Granola | 25 hours free |
| Fireflies.ai | 800 mins transcription free |
For casual users, Otter.ai’s free tier is more flexible. For Zoom-heavy users, Zoom AI is effectively free if you’re already paying for Zoom.
